Poverty, a perennial issue since the dawn of humanity, remains a significant concern across societies throughout history. In our contemporary era, poverty has recently gained considerable attention and has become a focal point for the international community. It is one of the most pervasive and pressing challenges faced by humanity today, with millions living in dire conditions that are both alarming and inhumane. Consequently, there is widespread discourse on poverty alleviation, with various measures being proposed and implemented with varying degrees of success.
In response to this critical issue, the Port Shepstone Islamic Welfare Trust (PSIWT) is currently distributing over 100 grocery vouchers to Zakah-eligible recipients in Bhoboyi, Gamaklakhe, Bhomela, Murchison, Umzumbe, Albersville, Marburg, and central Port Shepstone.
Additionally, the PSIWT provides monthly assistance to recipients in the following areas:
- Electricity Bill
- Rates payments
- Water Account
- Rent
The number of households assisted mayvary depending on regular reviews
Home Visits
Home visits are conducted weekly to assess, identify, and review cases. In instances where home visits are not feasible, recipients are evaluated at our office. Our staff maintains ongoing communication with Alims located in rural areas around Port Shepstone to ensure that contributions are effectively dispensed. We conduct home visits and office interviews on a monthly basis.
Counselling Services
Addressing social issues such as family problems and marital disputes requires early detection and prompt intervention. Cases of this nature identified by our office staff are immediately referred to appropriate specialists. Our committee includes four Ulema who assist in resolving these social issues. Your sincere Duas for the Ummah are greatly valued.
Education
Education is intrinsically linked to poverty. When parents cannot earn a sufficient income, their children are less likely to receive education. Without education, children face limited opportunities for self-sufficiency in the future, perpetuating the cycle of poverty. Research consistently demonstrates the transformative power of education in breaking poverty cycles and providing marginalized individuals with dignified employment and social mobility.
The PSIWT is committed to supporting learners in their educational pursuits. Since its inception, we have sponsored over 25 learners in various fields of study, both in the Islamic and secular fields. Learners have graduated in the following fields
- learners graduated with a B.Ed. degree from North West
- Leaner graduated in 2024 with a degree in radiology.
- Learner doing IFTA course
- Engineering degrees / electrical engineer. UKZN /DUT
- 1 learner pursuing an ALIMS course at a local Dar-ul Uloom
- 1 learner completed ALIMS course and is currently employed.
- NMBU
- Sisters pursuing Alima’s course in Pietermaritzburg.
- Varsity college
- Public relations and accounting. NWU
- We also assist with the payment of learner’s school fees in various schools.
Fitra Collection and Distribution
During Ramadan, the PSIWT collects and distributes Fitra and Fidya funds on your behalf. Collection points are established at all mosques. These funds are distributed directly to deserving recipients and Madressa students. Please note that no Fitra or Fidya funds should be deposited into our bank accounts. These should be delivered personally to our office, placed in collection boxes, or handed to responsible individuals. We acknowledge and appreciate your contributions.
Medical Assistance
In collaboration with a local doctor, the PSIWT provides basic medical care at his clinic. Zakatable cases are referred for medical assistance.
Substance and Drug Abuse
The escalation of drug and substance abuse in our community has reached concerning levels. To combat this issue, any identified cases seeking help are referred to RAUF for treatment and rehabilitation. Our sincere prayers are with them and their families.
